Most companies already have a JSA Program and Form in place. The S.O.S. JSA Enhancement System does not require changing your program or form, unless you choose to do so.
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a tool used by employees to identify hazards prior to starting a job. The job or task is identified, and the task is then broken into the steps required to complete the task. For each step of the task, the employees look for hazards which may be present, and determine the correct action to be taken to control each hazard.
The weakness in most JSA Programs is in Hazard Recognition. Once employees agree upon a step for the job, they use a random approach to identify the hazards for that step.
The S.O.S. JSA System© uses a Systematic approach to help employees identify hazards in each step of a JSA. An icon–based memory system helps employees to identify the hazards. There are ten situations or actions which lead to most incidents. Some of these ten are:
• Operating without proper Training or Authority
• Failure to Lock or Secure
• Operating at an Unsafe Speed
• Using an Improper Tool
• Improper Position
Employees use the icons as a prompter for potential hazards in each step of the JSA. As a result, as many as eight to ten potential hazards may be found for each step.
